The International Esports Federation (IESF)
Founded in 2008, the International Esports Federation (IESF) currently counts 54 member nations and holds tournaments all over the world bringing increased awareness to the sport.
The Brief: The IESF seeks to standardise their programs with a particular focus being placed on one of their major development pillars – the International Esports Referee Academy (to be launched in 2019).
Having already identified a Refereeing Commission, the IESF is looking to develop standard refereeing program throughout the world, taking as benchmark existing refereeing systems from other International Sports Federations’ (IF).
To support with this task, the International Academy of Sport Science and Technology (AISTS) worked with the IESF focusing on the following objectives:
- Identifying the referee structure being used by various IFs (e.g. National, Continental and International levels);
- Identifying Referee Training Processes (such as courses, programs and overall education systems) from various IFs;
- Benchmarking current educational programs/platforms offered to ensure the best solution in terms of ongoing quality of referees particularly for esports.
The Solution: The IFs selected for this study were from five different sports. The responsible individual for referee programs at each of the IFs was interviewed, and the information gathered was assembled into case studies highlighting the main aspects of their refereeing systems.
The Final Result: The information collected was then summarised and synthesised in order to provide recommendations for the development and structure of the IESF’s International Refereeing System.
Athletissima, an IAAF Diamond League event - Volunteer recruitment, management and training
The Brief: Recruit 24 French-speaking volunteers, preferably with a sport and/or nutrition background for 6 different cities…in three weeks for Athletissima’s brand new initiative: nutrition education for the annual kids clinics.
The Solution: A call was sent to all of AISTS’s contacts through direct email, website and social media, targeting our francophone followers with a background in nutrition and sports.
After screening and selecting our Ambassadors, the AISTS team created and delivered a tailored training workshop using materials kindly provided by Nestlé for all Ambassadors. The training covered aspects of health, nutrition and ways to engage with children in a fun and approachable way.
The details involved in distributing volunteer uniforms, rewards and transportation to each site was taken care of by the AISTS team, alongside a contingency plan in the case our Ambassadors could not make it on the day of the event.
The Final Result: Athletissima were able to successfully host the education booths at Kids Clinic in 6 different cities: Lausanne, Geneva, Fribourg, Sion, Delémont, and Colombier. Our Ambassadors spoke to over 1000 school-aged children answering questions and raising awareness of the importance of everyday healthfulness and nutrition.

Words from our Ambassadors:
“Interacting with elite athletes and using them as real examples to inform young kids about the benefits of eating and drinking healthy was a truly unique experience. I was really impressed by the interest and involvement of the kids as they took part in this fun and educational clinic. I look forward to being part of this amazing initiative next year”.
Ameline Gerbel, Athletissima Ambassador
“It is important for children to understand that a healthy diet is essential for good results and fun at school and on the sports field. Being able to raise awareness about this topic and hear about their own nutritional habits was a wonderful experience”.
Judith Bongard, Athletissima Ambassador
