The economic impact of the attendance to the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade resulted in a €40.4 million boost to the local region, the AISTS discovered in a recently completed mandate for FISU. The report found that every Euro spent in the Campania Region by non-local attendees, created between € 0.93 and € 1.18 for the host economy.

The AISTS has been conducting Economic Impact Studies for various organisations since 2003 and this is the third report completed by AISTS for FISU (Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire).

Held in Naples, Italy, from 3 -14 July, the 2019 Summer Universiade marked the 30th edition of the Games. Over 13 days it welcomed nearly 6,000 young athletes, 4,500 volunteers, nearly 295,000 attendees and hosted 18 sports in 55 venues across the Campania Region.

Following extensive analysis using AISTS’s proven economic impact methodology, the economic impact on the Campania Region was estimated at €40.4 million.

The Economic Impact Methodology

“Our methodology and the expert calculations are supervised by Professor Stéphane Garelli (IMD and University of Lausanne) and Professor Jean-Jacques Dethier (University of Berkeley, California and the University of Bonn), two world-renowned experts in macro-economics,” explains Dr. Claude Stricker, AISTS executive director.

The study was authored by Dr. Stricker and Dr. Giovanni-Battista Derchi, AISTS scientific advisor and assistant professor at Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (HES-SO University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland).

It discovered that over 45% of the attendees to the Summer Universiade (or Universiade) came from outside the Campania Region and 96% of those came with the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade as their primary purpose for visiting.

Over €39.2 million was spent by non-local representatives and attendees across hotel, food, transport, goods and other sectors. Additional economic impact came from indirect and induced spending, as illustrated in the infographic.

The value of a major sporting event

“The study conducted by AISTS is important for FISU as well as for the Organising Committee of the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade,” says  FISU Secretary General-CEO Eric Saintrond.

“It puts the 30th edition in context with previous games and demonstrates to all stakeholders including the local community, the event’s economic impact on the Campania Region. The findings of this study reiterate the fact that the legacy of the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade will not be only an economic one. Having such a report – with quality scientific methods backing the findings – is of great utility to FISU, as has been the case since the first study conducted in Gwangju in 2015.”
