AISTS was in Tokyo, Japan once again last week at the University of Tsukuba, lecturing to the TIAS (Tsukuba International Academy for Sport Studies) Masters Programme on the topic of Sport Finance and Economics.

This was the 7th joint seminar between AISTS and TIAS, within the context of the ‘Sport for Tomorrow’ programme. The AISTS has been delivering tailored education at the Tsukuba University in Japan for more than three years now. The ‘Sport for Tomorrow’ program, led by the Japanese government, is designed to promote the Olympic Movement around the globe, which included the creation of the TIAS in 2014.

AISTS has now provided over 30 expert speakers and lecturers to share their knowledge with the classes of the TIAS programmes.  The AISTS Chairman of the Scientific Committee, Professor Daniel Oyon, AISTS Alumni Gustavo Arellano and Diogo Jurema, AISTS Head of Projects, Geert Hendriks and Rob Abernethy, General Manager, Rugby World Cup 2019 all presented in last week’s seminar.  The current TIAS class consists of 20 participants from 16 nationalities, with an average age of 30 years old.

The AISTS also delivers the SEMOS™ Open Module annually in Tokyo in June.  The SEMOS™ Open Module was first launched in 2001 and has been held annually in Lausanne ever since with it being held for the first time in Tokyo, Japan, in October 2014.  It focuses on the organisation of mega sports events offering an overview of the key tasks that sports managers need to successfully plan, communicate and operate when organising sport events.

The week ended with a cocktail reception hosted by the Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan, Mr Jean-Francois Paroz and Dr Yulia Gusynina Paroz, to celebrate the Swiss-Japanese ties in sport management ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The evening commemorated 1 250 days of the partnership between the AISTS and TIAS and was attended by over 40 delegates from the government of Japan, the Japanese Olympic Committee, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and other corporate institutions.  Dr Kyosuke Nagata, President of the University of Tsukuba, Professor Daniel Oyon, the AISTS Chairman of the Scientific Committee and Dr Ichiro Kono, Vice President of Tokyo 2020, all gave a short speech in regards to the educational legacy being developed in Japan in the lead up to the 2020 Games and the strong collaboration between the Swiss and Japanese sports industries.
